A Quick Guide to Dry Shampoo: The Key to “Good Mom Hair”

Its no surprise mom life has most of us going far longer then we would like to between washing our hair and when we do its a big deal! Our hair in between usually ends up in some sort of bun or ponytail. Either its dirty, or being ripped out by tiny sticky fingers. Dry Shampoo is a great alternative to mom hair, keeping us looking and feeling our best in between washes. It was my number one must have hair product as stylist working in the salon for myself and clients. And it has remained my number one as a momma to look and feel my best between hair washes.

So what’s so great about it?
Dry shampoos absorb oil off of the scalp and out of your hair, revitalize the body in your style, extending it between wash days. In some cases they deliver nutrients directly to the scalp to help with scalp health and growth. And lets not forget they help to refresh the smell of your hair! They can be great style preppers as well. I tend to always finish off my bangs with a little on my wash/style days so they don’t end up greasy by the end of the day from face oils and creams.

How do you use it?
You want to start by applying on to dry hair, no need to wet your hair in between washings. I have 3 go to ways of using my dry shampoos. On day one of my style adding into by bangs as mentioned above. Second, applying at night before I go to bed. If you apply at night before you go to bed you wont wake up with flat hair and the dry shampoos will work to absorb oil and spread out evenly while you sleep. Just use your finger tips to massage through in the morning and style as usual! The third way is the most common. Applying before you are going to style your hair or anytime you need a quick refresh before heading out of the house. The key to application is layering. Spray lightly, and massage or brush through adding more if needed. I always focus on the elbows out rule as you spray, keep your elbow out as you spray so you are keeping the nozzle at least 4-6 inches away from your scalp.

Are ready to get yours?
Listed below are some top performing dry shampoos. With quality ingredients you can trust. The key is always buy professionally and when in doubt ask your own stylist for her personal recommendations.

1.)Paul Mitchell Dry Wash: This is my personal favorite. You don’t need a whole lot to get the job done so the bottle seems to last forever. Dry Wash works great in darker hair or lighter hair and doesn’t have a smell that will make you cringe and think dirty hair every time you smell it. The product itself is clear and comes out in a fine mist with good coverage. Typically if I spray this in on the second or third day of my style I wont need to re- apply the following day. Bonus: Cruelty Free

2.) Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo: With its signature Oribe scent that lasts all day long this is definitely a top choice for a lot of woman. If you haven’t smelled Oribe before be prepared to fall in love. Gold lust is also a very light mist and is fortified with lots of goodness like lavender and chamomile for your hair and scalp. It will leave your hair soft and touchable not gritty and weighed down. Bonus: Vegan, cruelty, and gluten free and provides UV protection.

3.) IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo: IGK makes multiple dry shampoos for different needs. Maybe it was jumping on the charcoal band wagon or reading that it works even after work outs (ie running around with 3 under 3) that sold me on this but I absolutely love it. If you have darker hair try not to go over board and the key with this one seems to be brushing it through rather then massaging. It truly does cool and calm the scalp all benefits from white tea, and adds slight texture. Bonus: Vegan, cruelty and gluten free, free of harsh artificial chemicals, and UV protecting.

4.)R + Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste: Yes you read that right a paste! This is amazing for texture loving Mommas who love a beachy feel and great volume, or for those with sassy, short cuts. It comes in a puck and you use your fingertips to apply it directly to the roots. On your day 2 hair or on your damp hair before you style for added volume, texture and longevity. Bonus: Vegan and Cruelty Free.

5.)Dry Bar Detox Dry Shampoo: Restores Moisture using golden root extract making the hair feel super plush and soft. This one tends to be a little more visible in darker hair and does add great texture. I liked using this for a quick perk up on the last day before washing. This one does have a sweeter scent so personal preference is mixed here. Bonus: Cruelty free, no sulfates, parabens, or phthalates.
